“Art Saves Lives” is a favorite expression of Stoney Lamar and now is
certainly one of mine. In October of 1997, we organized a weekend for collectors
of wood art in Little Rock which was attended by 125 collectors, artists,
gallery owners and museum directors. The purpose for getting together was to
promote the artists of wood, maybe saving a few lives, and to educate everyone
about the exciting work that was being done, and still is in the wood field. The
list of artists doing new and innovative work was growing and the number of
collectors, most of whom are passionate about wood, was not increasing at the
same pace. With the formation of the Collectors of Wood Art (CWA), we feel that
we are on the right track toward organizing collectors and artists to further
the wood field.
The weekend (which will now be called the Forum), was an exciting time for those
who attended. We held a reception to view our new home and collection. At the
Arkansas Arts Center’s Decorative Arts Museum, there was an incredible exhibit
of wood, half of which sold during the weekend. The Arkansas Arts Center
purchased five of the pieces for its collection. There was also a regional show
at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The slide show presented by
attending artists was the event most talked about and we were encouraged to
include similar slide shows in our subsequent Forums. On the last day of the
weekend, the artists presented available work at an instant gallery at our shop.
There was quite a bit of interest in the work and sales were good. The Steering
Committee and many future members have discussed this concept at length, and
decided that the galleries need to become a part of the group by presenting work
to the membership. Hopefully, with the growth of the CWA, we will be able to
convince more galleries around the country to carry wood art, and to enable more
representation of artists in the future.
The enthusiasm and passion that emerged from the weekend in Little Rock was
overwhelming. We know that it will continue in San Francisco with the exciting
itinerary that Ron and Anita Wornick have developed for us. We hope to see you
there.
This is the first issue of the FORUM, a newsletter of the Collectors of Wood Art. The Survey which went out earlier this year provided a great number of ideas for the newsletter. In fact, if we were to act on all of them, we would be starting off with a magazine.
The FORUM will certainly grow, as these ideas are explored. The continued input of members will be vital to making this newsletter serve as the voice for the Collectors of Wood Art. Your participation is essential, so please call, write, fax or e-mail.

Ron & Anita Wornick will be hosting the 2nd Forum at the Renaissance Parc 55 Hotel in San Francisco.
According to Tran Turner, who is organizing the event, the weekend will begin with a reception on Friday evening at the hotel. On Saturday there will be slide presentations by artists, organizational meetings, exhibits by galleries and a dinner. Sunday will feature an academic forum with curators, critics, artists and collectors as well as a visit to Ron & Anita Wornick’s home in Napa. From educational to social opportunities, the weekend promises to be very rewarding. For more information please contact Tran.
A total of 56 questionnaires were received. This was an excellent response rate; we thank you for your assistance. The following is an overview of the results.
100% of those who participated in the survey felt that it was of substantial or great importance that the group provides opportunities to interact with collectors and makers and 91% felt that it was of substantial or great importance that the organization hold an annual conference. The majority of those surveyed also felt that it was important to publish a newsletter, publicize turning related events, develop a map of members willing to share their collections with visiting members, provide financial support for catalogs and turning related events and provide workshops for collector issues (lighting, donating works, etc...)
